Open classes are taught by The Joffrey artistic staff as well as some of the best dance educators in the world. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned dancer you will

All open class tuition is based on a 9 week quarter. Class cards and single class rates are available for youth and adult classes.


Children’s Classes
All Children’s Classes must register for the 9 week quarter. There are no drop ins.
Creative Movement Level I (3 yrs)
An introduction to dance! Students learn to love dance while developing, coordination, imagination, memory, musicality and motor skills.
Mondays: 10:00-11:00 am

Just for Boys (4-6 yrs)
An athletic and artistic class introducing boys to dance. Designed to keep up with their fast paced energy, this class is an introduction to dance, where students will develop coordination,
agility, strength, and musicality. It will never stop moving!

Open Adult Classes
The Adult Program at the Joffrey Ballet is designed for adult dancers 15 and up. The classes are designed for beginner dancers as well as classes for the professional. Whether you are
a working professional or someone who wants to learn to dance for the first time there is a class for you!
Beginning Ballet |
Designed for the beginning dancer or someone who hasn’t taken ballet in a long time…This class is for you! |
Intermediate Ballet |
Designed for students who are studying regularly and are placed at the intermediate level by the Joffrey staff. Taking class at least 2x’s
a week is suggested. |
Advanced Ballet |
Designed for the serious dancer or professional who is looking for that challenging class. Taking class at least 2x’s a week is suggested. |
Ballet for Broadway |
A class for the professional dancer wanting to warm up before a matinee or just in need of a Sunday class. A hit with professional musical theater
dancers! |
Beginning Jazz |
Designed for the beginning dancer or someone who hasn’t taken a dance class in a long time. |
Intermediate Jazz |
Designed for the student who has a good foundation of dance, and has had some classical training and previous jazz dance experience. |
Advanced Jazz |
Designed for the seasoned dancer who, has classical training and enjoys traditional jazz and a fast paced challenge. |
Pilates Mat |
No experience necessary – class tailored to the regulars. Exercises earmarked for core stamina, postural alignment, and great overall tone. May even replace
Starbucks! Take all or some of the classes each week. Get a discount if you take all three for the semester. |
Introduction to Pilates |
Learn the exercises in a group setting with individual attention. A clarification of the beginning Pilates exercises to strengthen, balance and align
the body in a setting offering personal corrections and a bit of humor. |
Beginning Pilates |
The great lunch break! Release the tension midday and midweek; then return to work wondering what was bothering you. A fluid class done to relaxing
music; heavy emphasis on core strengthening and tension release. |
Advanced Pilates |
Experience is a must! This class will build on the foundation you’ve developed in the essential levels of Pilates. A beautiful workout for the entire body
but only if you are ready to meet the challenge. Specifically earmarked for the professional and aspiring professional dancer/athlete; this mat class is aimed at reducing injury risk
in the movement specialist’s daily regime. |
“Keep Fit Jazz Workout” |
This exercise jazz class will keep you fit all while enjoying the upbeat tempo and energy of a jazz dance class. Core strength and stretch are also
a part of this class. |
“Keep Fit Ballet Workout” |
This exercise ballet class will keep you fit all while experiencing the joy of ballet class. Traditional ballet class with a focus on getting you
in shape! |
African |
This energizing class will teach dances from different African cultures emphasizing principles of musicality, core-strength and stamina. |
Latin |
For the adult beginner. Learn the Basics of Salsa & Merengué (no partner needed). A great social event! |
Advanced Contemporary |
Designed for the advanced/professional dancer with classical training and a strong foundation in modern/contemporary dance. |
Beginning Modern |
A beginning course in modern dance emphasizing principles of connectivity, musicality and strength. |
Advanced Modern |
Designed for the advanced/professional dancer, this class will train dancers in different styles of modern emphasizing common principles of connectivity, musicality and strength. |
Intermediate Hip Hop |
This class will focus on Hip Hop and freestyle. |
Advanced Hip Hop |
Designed for the experienced Hip Hop dancer, looking for a high energy class to enhance personal style in poppin’, locking and breaking. |
Beginning Tap |
A beginning class teaching basic tap rhythms, steps and coordination. |

Free Classes

The Academy of Dance (Official School of The Joffrey Ballet) is offering FREE DANCE CLASSES open to the public on the 3rd Sunday of each month, 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Sunday, January 18, 2009 - Beginning Ballet for adults (must be 15 or older)
Sunday, February 15, 2009 - Beginning Latin for kids, ages 9-14
Sunday, March 15, 2009 - Beginning Ballet for kids, ages 9-14
Sunday, April 19, 2009 - Beginning Latin for adults (must be 15 or older)
Sunday, May 17, 2009 - Beginning Hip Hop for kids, ages 9-14
All classes are held at Joffrey Tower, 10 E. Randolph Street, Chicago, IL 60601.
Come to the 3rd floor, the Exelon Education Center. Please follow recommended attire policies listed under Children and Youth Attire and Adult
Tuition and Fees
Due to limited class sizes, you must register by the Friday prior to each class. Because registration is on a first come, first serve basis, we recommend early registration. There is no registration
fee for these classes.
Parental consent form must be completed for anyone under the age of 18
The Academy of Dance reserves the right to cancel class due to insufficient enrollment

Performance Opportunities
Performance is an important part of a dancer’s education. The Academy of Dance strives to provide students with the following performances:
• Year End Class Presentation. This very special performance will be held in The Joffrey’s Blackbox Theatre. Each class will present works
and demonstrate accomplishments of the year. No costume will be required; everyone will participate in class attire. Date and Details TBA. Continue to visit joffrey.org for
more updates.
• Pre-Professional Training students will have additional performance opportunities to be announced.
• Opening Gala Performance. To Be Announced
